Ayrton Senna 1988 Print – David Johnson

Having started life in F1 with the mid-pack Toleman F1 team, Senna then moved to Lotus and at the end of 1987 the Brazilian left to go to McLaren. In his debut season with the British team, Senna would go on to win his first World Championship.  

This print from David Johnson perfectly encapsulates McLaren’s dominating MP4/5, piloted by Ayrton Senna, in all its glory. The print shows the car’s iconic white and red chevroned Marlboro livery perfectly. It also features Senna’s renowned primarily yellow with green and black stripes helmet. Are there two designs in F1 more notorious than these two?  

The season started in controversy. On the green flag lap, Senna’s gear selector broke meaning he could no longer change gear. The Brazilian managed to get his car back to the pits, doing the whole lap in first gear, and quickly got into the spare car to start the race from the pitlane. By lap 20 Senna had brought his McLaren all the way up to second place, behind his teammate, Alain Prost. However, the stewards determined that whilst using the ‘third car’ is legal, it is illegal after the green flag has started and he was black-flagged. Not to worry, the Brazilian hero won from pole at the following race at Imola.  

Ayrton Senna went on to take a total of 8 race wins on his way to the Drivers Title. At the time, that was the most race wins taken by a driver in a single season. Making it the most ‘Ayrton Senna’ way to win a World Championship, the hardest way possible. Celebrate the iconic driver with this print.
